You Tell Me: What’s Your Current Genre Obsession?

There’s so much changing in the world every day. When you break it all down, you can see the massive changes happening in different divisions of it: politics, your own personal life, movies, books, technology, etc. Since we’re about wordage and make-believe here, lets talk books. New Adult was something that started to really come into its own last year, and the push hasn’t seemed to slow down, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only thing trending for you at the moment. A lot of readers are finding a new genre of book that they’re falling in love with, all because of a recommendation, or because they yearned for something a little different. Each of us go through our own phases of reading preferences, so today I want to open up the discussion to you.

For me, Fantasy always is at the top of my list. I’m a big fan of Urban Fantasy, and for years that hasn’t changed. The Maze Runner was the most recent series to take me by surprise, and that’s not really Fantasy. I mean it is, but it’s more Sci-Fi than anything else, I think. I’m not sure. Genre’s have always kind of messed me up. Regardless, I really enjoyed it, and that has made me want to try out more Sci-Fi since I’m seriously under-read in that category. In general, I seem to prefer Young Adult Fantasy to anything else. There’s something about taking the world we live in, and adding in magic and monsters that never seems to get old to me, but I’m always willing to try new things.

Today I want to hear from you. I want to know what your current obsession is? Is it Fantasy, New Adult Romances, Romance in general, Mystery, Thriller? Anything. What is your bookish guilty pleasure right now, and to support the authors you love, tell us about a book you’ve read recently that helped push this new obsession along, or the book that started it all for you.

  1. My fave genre is probably Urban Fiction. I tend to go back to that when I need to get out of a reading slump. I’ve noticed I’ve been reading a lot more New Adult Romance. It still has those sweet moments, but amongst older people. I don’t feel like such a creeper when I’m reading about 20 somethings. 😛 One of my fave in that category is Heather London. I need to devour anything else she’s written. 😛 And the book that makes me want to do that is Fall From Love. I’m not sure why I’m so sappy all of a sudden, but hey it gives me warm fuzzies. 😀

    • Haha, warm fuzzies are good! I think sometimes we just need to get a certain something from a book, and switching genres can sometimes be the best way to get that!

  2. Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense, and New Adult. I got burned out with PNR last year and I’m still waiting for my mojo to come back.

    • Lost mojo!? Oh no! haha. I think we all definitely have those times where we just need a break. We get so caught up in things, because we fall in love with something and devour everything we can to get more, that sometimes it becomes the “same ol’ same ol’,” you know? A break is good sometimes. Especially if it leads to the discovery of a new love!

  3. I’m most “passionate” about really good either Epic Fantasies or Dystopians. But lately I’ve been in a NA Contemporary slump. Which isn’t bad, I’m not complaining, they just happen to be what I’ve been getting sucked into for reviews. But to be honest I’m not that picky when it comes to genres. As long as the blurb interests me I’m in. I try to mix it up as much as I can though so I don’t get burned out.

  4. Mine is Fantasy, dystopian, Post Apocalyptic, and some Middle Grade Fantasy. I enjoy Sci-Fi but not the heavy kind!! Dont Like Contemporary nor New Adult 🙂

    • you and me are kind of on the same page. Dystopian is kind of new to me. I haven’t ventured into that territory much, but I’m starting to really enjoy it 🙂

    • I totally get those. I’m that way with movies too. Sometimes I just need to see something hardcore and in my face. I jump from genre to genre that way too. I get in moods where I want to see bad guys get seriously messed up haha. I like a good guy who doesn’t mind breaking some rules. 🙂

  5. Right now I am hooker on Fae….well I’m always hooked on Fae, but I’ve seen books with this specific type of influence. It makes me happy happy happy!

  6. horror and thriller like Stephen King books I love them so much but am all ways changing what I like and I read what people say was a good book to give them feedback on the book and I follow the writer on twitter and comment on the books of theirs that I have read and what ones I am reading or if they like any books that I could read as well 🙂 <3
