I started this day, like I have every day for the last two weeks – exhausted. I’m not sure why. I don’t want to blame the time change, because the first week and a bit after ward I was fine, but then something hit me. It doesn’t seem to matter how much sleep I get, I’m tired. Ugh. I hate it. I’m blaming the fact that I’ve upgraded to an office job, so rather than working my but off all day, I’m actually sitting in front of a computer. Apparently my body likes exercise.
Anyways, throughout my lack of sleep, I find myself getting a little cranky, sometimes just the thought of getting out of bed is crankifying (yes that’s a word, check the Mattsters Dictionary). Music however, makes everything better.
This doesn’t just apply to shaking the crank out of my step, it applies to all things in my life. My iPod, is a prized possession to me. When the battery is dead, I’m seriously sad. Lucky for me, I have music on my iPhone while I wait for it to charge.
Music has gotten me through every difficult time in my life. If I’ve struggled with something, music has carried me through it. No word of a lie. I could list a difficult situation, and probably name you the song that was most powerful for me at that time.
There are a few artists that are always on my playlist. It doesn’t matter what mood I’m in, or what’s happening in my life, they are there. So I thought I would share them with you today.
Eminem – Anyone who really knows me, knows I love his music. I love it to the point that my wife hates him, because I listen to him so much. I’m okay with that. Eminem is an unbelievable lyricist. His writing is incredibly powerful (to me) and I just… “Get it” I guess.
Otis Redding – Sitting By The Dock Of The Bay, will forever be one of my favorite songs. That song has definitely seen me at my worst, but it never fails to make me smile. Most of Otis Redding’s music has that effect on me. Try A Little Tenderness, and I’ve Been Loving You are fighting for spot number 2.
Blind Melon – Okay, there is really only one song here, and that’s No Rain. I don’t care what is going on in your life, if you’re happy, sad, angry…it’s impossible not to bob your head to this tune. I love it. Consider this my happy song.
There are more of course, I’m a huge eclectic when it comes to music. I love everything from Hedley, Paramore (Love them), Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, The Corrs, 2 Pac, Bon Jovi, Matchbox 20/Rob Thomas, Collective Soul, to pretty much every 80’s rock band. With the exception of death metal, I love all music. I won’t list every artist and song that has/does rock my world, but these are some. The top 3 are the first I turn to at any given time.
So there you have it. My life has a soundtrack. Music fuels my engine and propels me forward. It always has, and always will.
What about you? Does music play a big part in your life? What are your favorite artists or song that get you through the day?
